Does street art have a place in our cities? StreetSauce follows works-in-progress, artists and controversies to make a strong case for the importance of public art.

Tom Knowlton answered a few questions.
What inspired your film?
This film idea started a couple of years ago, when we realized that we walk or drive around our city streets all the time … noticing public art… but never really knowing much about it.
We decided that we would find out more about the public art in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge… capture images of lots of stuff from sculptures to paintings to graffiti… and follow some works-in-progress.
What was your biggest challenge in making your film?
Perhaps the biggest challenge in making the film was trying to capture the full range of works that are on display in Waterloo Region. In the end, we gathered footage of many pieces and also focussed on a handful of specific artworks that were associated with our interviews. At times, weather conditions also hampered our shooting schedule.
What was the best part of the experience for you?
It was a pleasure and a privilege to interview and get to know the artists, local planners and other personalities who agreed to appear in StreetSauce! The challenge of artistically handling the capture of various artworks was also a real highlight.
What advice would you give aspiring filmmakers?
Follow stories and ideas that feel meaningful to you. Keep exploring the story that you are interested in, even if you’re a bit unsure of where it is all going.
What’s next for you?
Paul Campsall and I are hoping to produce profiles of a wide range of artists in our community featuring soundtracks by local musicians.
